About Us

The Kemetic Institute for Health and Human Development (KIHHD) is an organization designed to provide continuous wellness education to the citizens of South Carolina through research, workshops, conferences, physical fitness programs and health-related presentations to improve their physiological and psychological well-being. Our vision is to help create a healthier society by improving the overall well-being of South Carolinians.

It is well documented that South Carolina ranks among the highest in the nation in known cases of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The programs and services we present are conducted by professionals in health services fields. KIHHD develops partnerships with medical professionals, local colleges, churches, and city and county recreation departments.

KIHHD is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization and all financial contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Board of Directors:


  Dr. William F. Gunn, Jr.

Dr. William F. Gunn, Jr. is an internationally known scholar, educator and author. With nearly fifty years of teaching and coaching at historically Black colleges and universities, Dr. Gunn's commitment and dedication to educating African Americans is legendary. An icon at Benedict College, he served as division chair, professor, athletic director, coach and chairman of their department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation (HPER) for forty-five years. During that time he taught thousands of students and developed the programs and led the department to receiving accreditation from the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA). He then developed and implemented the Sports Management major at Voorhees College in Denmark, S.C. In 2009, Dr. Gunn founded the Kemetic Institute for Health and Human Development and continues to further his mission of educating and uplifting African Americans. 
 
Mr. James Brown III


Mr. James Brown III is the Executive Director of the Richland County Recreation Commission. Mr. Brown has over twenty-five years of experience in parks and recreation and leads South Carolina's first (and only) accredited parks and recreation agency. He also spent many years coaching championship winning college Basketball and Baseball teams. In 2011, his collegiate athletic accomplishments were honored as he was inducted into the Benedict College Athletic Hall of Fame.
 
Mrs. Wilhelmina Addison-Harrell
 

Mrs. Addison-Harrell is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and an active member of the South Carolina Recreation and Parks Association (SCRPA) and the South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD). She is also actively involved with the American Red Cross and the co-owner of Addison Community Care. She previous taught in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department at Benedict College where she also served as the Academic Coordinator of the Internship Program.
 

Dr. Tami Ashford-Carroll

Dr. Tami Ashford-Carroll is an Assistant Professor of Public Health at Benedict College. She received a B.A. in Biology from Illinois Wesleyan University. She continued her education at Columbia University in New York earning an M.S. in Social Work and an M.P.H. with a concentration in geriatrics. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina in Epidemiology.
   
Mr. Randy Davis

Mr. Randy Davis is the Recreation Superintendent for the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department. A native of western Pennsylvania, Mr. Davis has an extensive background in the fields of parks and recreation, therapeutic recreation and education. His previous experience includes working as a recreation therapist, director of activity therapy and taught recreation and leisure studies on the college level for more than ten years. Mr. Davis is also a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
 
Burnett Gallman, M.D.


Dr. Burnett Gallman is a practicing physician in Columbia, S.C. He is a member of the national Board of Directors of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC). He is also the author of "Innervisions: Rx for Survival for People of African Origin" and co-author of "Project Samoa: a Rites of Passage Program."
  Mrs. Davida M. Manning

Mrs. Davida Manning works at the South Carolina Department of Disbilities and Special Needs. She attended Clemson University majoring in Graphics Communications and graduated from Midlands Technical College with a degree in Engineering Graphics Technology.
  Mr. Julian Shabazz

Mr. Julian Shabazz works as Recreation Programmer for the Richland County Recreation Commission. He is the author of ten books which have centered around African American experiences.
